Ashe County High School three-sport athlete Mallary Clay has been chosen along with 19 other athletes from North Carolina as state finalists for the Wendys High School Heisman award.
Over 55,000 high school seniors applied for this award across the country, so of course being in the final 20 in any chosen state is a huge accomplishment. The award is given to athletes based on their performances on the court, their hard work and volunteer spirit in the community and high academic achievement in the classroom.
Clay has put together an outstanding athletic career at ACHS, especially playing basketball under head coach Laura Foster. Clay was chosen as the 2009-2010 MVAC Player of the Year while also earning All-Conference and All-Conference Tournament honors. She was also named to the Winston Salem Journals All-Northwest Team for her outstanding play last season. Clay helped lead one of the best teams in ACHS history last season. The Lady Huskies finished the season with a 24-2 record, while going undefeated in conference and winning both the Mountain Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships. Clay averaged 15 points per game, while also grabbing 4 rebounds, picking up 3 steals, and dishing out 1 assist per contest.
This Friday, one male and one female athlete from each state will be chosen as state winners for the award. Of that list of winners, 12 will be chosen as national finalists and will go on to compete to be crowned the winner in New York City on December 10. All of the national finalists will be featured in a televised ceremony on the ESPN family of networks and will receive a $2,000 award for their respective high schools as well as a gold medal for their achievements. One male and one female winner will be given the Wendys High School Heisman trophy and Wendys will donate $10,000 to the winners school. After that, the winners will once again be recognized, this time on the greatest stage of all, at the 2010 Heisman Trophy presentation on ESPN from the Best Buy Theatre in Times Square where the top collegiate football player will receive the honor of a lifetime.
