The Ashe County High School’ Husky Vanguard Marching Band wraps up two weeks of band camp this week, where they have been working on their 2013-14 competition show “Legends,” a pops program featuring tunes by Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Ludwig Van Beethoven.

“Were doing a lot of competitions this year,” said Carrie Mitchell, now in her second year as band director.

The band will travel to competitions in Asheville, Avery and Caldwell counties and Greensboro this year, Mitchell said. Ashe County High School will also be hosting a competition in stadium Oct. 5.

Last year, they took first or second in every Division 1A category in which they competed, she said.

The band’s first gig this year will be at the Huskies’ first home game against Watauga Aug. 30, she said.

With 50 kids in the ensemble, participation is up this year, Mitchell said. “We’ve got high numbers. It’s increasing after years of steady decline.”

The band is in good form this year. At their Tuesday practice, they worked through some rough spots in the program with a palpable buckled-down enthusiasm.

Mitchell supplies a good deal of this with her hands-on teaching style, which is at once, uncompromising and easy-going, and seems to drive home the message: if it isn’t right it isn’t fun.

“I like what I do. My job is my hobby and my passion,” she said.
