Downtown West Jefferson will see some more construction work starting Monday with the next phase of streetscape.

Town Manager Brantley Price announced earlier this week that work will begin Monday at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Ashe Street – with Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church and LifeStore headquarters on one side and Frasers restaurant and Swirly Road Antiques on the other - creating a look similar to that at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Main Street.

The main difference for this site will be that the curbing will be only on Jefferson Avenue and not curve around on Ashe because of the narrowness of the roadway. Otherwise, the enhancements will include concrete curbing and brick pavers, trees and landscaping, and decorative street lights and stop signs.

The work will be done by Vannoy Construction Company and is expected to be completed by Aug. 24, said Price. Although work will take place about 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday as with the other intersection, Price said traffic should not be affected unless a detour becomes necessary when concrete is poured.

Other intersections at State Street and 1st Street painted for the bumpouts will be considered next spring as funding becomes available, Price said.
