Ashe County remained undefeated in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference with a 2-1 win over Starmount and a 3-2 win against Elkin.
At home against Elkin, Ashe came out a bit sluggish and allowed the Elks to take an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the ninth minute of play.
That seemed to wake the Huskies up as Frank Ledezma quickly answered with a scoring tally just one minute later.
Cesar Ruiz put the Huskies in front 2-1 with a goal in the final minute of the first half.
Ashe kept the offensive intensity up to start the final 40 minutes of play. Anthony Federico had his shot stopped by a diving Elkin goalkeeper in the 46th minute. The Huskies had a corner kick in the 49th minute, but could not get a shot off through the Elkin defense.
The Elks tied the score at 2-2 with a goal in the 61st minute from Ashton Gant, leaving the result of the game up in the air for the final 20 minutes of play.
Ruiz and Miguel Ramos had a pair of golden scoring opportunities getting open inside the scoring box, but saw their shots sail over the goal post in the 73rd and 76th minutes.
Ashe goalie Braxton Treadway did his part in keeping the score tied, making a diving save in the 74th minute on a shot from Gant.
Ruiz bounced back from his earlier miss and was able to nail the game-winner in the 77th minute with a perfect shot to the left of the keeper.
Elkin could not even get a shot on goal in the final three minutes of play with the Husky defense stiffening up to hold on to the win.
The Huskies improved to 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the MVAC. Elkin, who entered play ranked 15th in the state among 1A teams, dropped to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the MVAC.
This victory marked Ashe’s 15th consecutive win.
Ashe traveled to West Wilkes on Monday, and will wrap up play this week with a home match against North Wilkes on Thursday.
