Robert Shepherd, who was born March 11, 1927, in Garden City, Kansas, and died Nov. 7, 2012, in St. Petersburg, Fla., was the loving husband of Nena Belle Barr Shepherd for more than 54 years.
Bob attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and served the U.S. Government for 38 years both stateside and abroad (Department of Commerce, U.S. Defense Department, U.S. European Central Command Headquarters, Advanced Research Projects Agency). He was a man of principle and patriotism, with his interest in U.S. policies and politics continuing throughout his life. In retirement years, Eckerd College was the beneficiary of his knowledge through ASPEC (Academy of Senior Professionals) as he happily led foreign affairs discussions and activities.
Nena Barr Shepherd was born in Ashe County, and is the daughter of Basil Duke Barr and Mabel Phillips Barr. BD Barr was well known as a fine cabinet maker and his valued work graces many homes. The Barr’s also had two sons: Winfred Barr (deceased) and Basil Duke Barr, II who resides in Tennessee.
Robert is survived by: Nena Shepherd (wife), St. Petersburg, Fla.; Laura Shepherd (daughter), Fredericksburg, Va.; Chris Shepherd (son) and three grandchildren, Savannah, Vanessa, and Jessica-Lou of Geneva, Switzerland.
