Man arrested for stealing truck

A local man was arrested after he allegedly stole a truck, as well as several items from Walmart.


Gregory Carl Chakmakis, 33, of West Jefferson was arrested on Jan. 21, and charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and resisting a public officer. The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office made the arrest.


The West Jefferson Police Department also had outstanding warrants for Chakmakis related to items allegedly stolen from Wal-Mart, including a 46-inch television, Mag-Lite, and a Nintendo Wii console, all valued at nearly $900.


The ACSO also reported that Chakmakis had stolen at 1994 Toyota truck, valued at $6,500. The owner of the truck met Chakmakis driving the stolen truck while in another vehicle. The owner then called his wife and found out that the truck was indeed missing from his house, and then immediately notified the sheriff’s office.


Officers located the stolen vehicle parked outside of a trailer park in the Beaver Creek area, and surrounded the area waiting for the suspect to leave. According to the ACSO, Chakmakis fled on foot for approximately 200 yards before being captured and taken to the Ashe County Detention Center.


Chakmakis is currently being held under a $32,000 bond.
