A pair of seniors stepped up and hit two of the biggest shots of the season on Tuesday evening.
In the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Anderson Moore drilled a three-point shot to send the game between Ashe and the East Wilkes Cardinals into overtime.
At the end of overtime, it would be Jordan Spell that buried the game-winning jumper to avenge a loss to the Cardinals earlier in the season. Ashe beat East Wilkes, 61-59.
Junior Cullen Ashley had a big game for Ashe with a team-high 14 points. Senior Eli Gambill added 10 points, Spell finished with nine and Devan Sheets scored nine. Moore ended up with seven points, Seth Sheets scored six, Johnathan Cox had five and Zach Lawrence finished with one free throw.
For East Wilkes, McKinley Johnson led all scorers with 17. Avery Wallis chipped in 15, Jared Bryan had 10 points, Abram Logan had nine and Jathon Sales finished with six.
The Huskies improved to 6-13 overall and 5-7 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. East Wilkes dropped to 6-12 overall and 4-7 in conference.
This game was the second in as may days for the Huskies. On Monday, Starmount defeated Ashe 49-43 after a huge fourth quarter effort from the Rams where the team scored 28 points and overcame a double-digit deficit.
Zach Worley led Starmount’s balanced scoring attack with 10 points. Luke Shore scored eight points, James Ashley added seven and Gunner Cass had six.
Spell tallied 12 points and three rebounds, Moore had nine points and five boards while D. Sheets added six points and three rebounds. Cox finished with five points and a team-leading three steals, Gambill had four points, Lawrence added our points, S. Sheets finished with two and Matthew Lee added a free throw.
Ashe will be back on its home court Friday night to take on Alleghany.
