Carolyn Bare Gibbs Nicholson Smith of Engelhard passed away on Feb. 4, 2013. She was 77.
She was born on March 9, 1935, in Jefferson. She was raised in Ashe County by her late parents, Ambrose and Lena Bower Bare, along with her nine brothers and sisters.
Carolyn attended Lees McRae College and Appalachian State University. She also received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from East Carolina University. She taught in the Hyde County School System for 33 years.
She resided in Engelhard, where she raised her three daughters in a spiritual, loving home. Carolyn was a member of the Engelhard United Methodist Church where she was very instrumental in church activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband and father of her daughters, James Allen Gibbs of Engelhard; three daughters and their families, all who reside in Greenville, Lisa Carolyn Gibbs, Candace Gibbs Watson, husband Randy Nelson Watson and their daughters Kayla and Haley, and Allison Gibbs Harris, husband David Wayne Harris and their daughters Courtney and Caitlin; her siblings Grady Bare of Kansas, Grace Coldiron of Lakeland, Fla., Irene Sheets of Jefferson, and Jack Bare of Lakeland, Fla.; and her husband, Larry Douglas Smith.
Always a loving mother and grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, and playing bridge. Carolyn was a very wise, business-minded, and intelligent woman who will be missed dearly by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Amity United Methodist Church in Engelhard.
