In Ashe County’s final non-conference battle of the season, the Huskies defeated Oak Hill Academy, winning the match by an 8-1 score.
“This match was a little more contested than the first match with Oak Hill where we won easily, 9-0,” said head coach Larry Dix.
Top seed Sam Bowers took the first set 6-2, but found things a little tougher in the second set against Oak Hill top seed Edson Vences. Vences forced a tiebreaker in the second set, but Bowers would hang on to win the set, 7-5.
Lucas Zeller defeated TW Bradshaw in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, as did third seed Een Shepherd who took down Josh Yoon by an identical score.
In the fourth seeded match, Ashe’s Jacob O’Neal scored a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Tae Joo Yang.
The final singles victory for Ashe was a 6-0, 6-0 win for Andrew Shepherd over Ming Weili.
Oak Hill’s lone win of the day came in the fifth seeded match. Ashe player Travis Stanley won the first set 6-3, but Spencer Titzman stormed back to take the second set by a 6-4 score. In the third set tiebreaker, Titzman claimed the match with a 10-8 win.
The Huskies were able to win all three doubles matches, though they were relatively close. Bowers and Zeller were 8-3 winners over Vences and Bradshaw. Shepherd and O’Neal earned an 8-4 win over the duo of Yoon and Yang. The final match was an 8-5 win for Jordan Spell and Jake Harrington over Titzman and Van Stipper.
With the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament quickly approaching, Coach Dix hopes that the team can use Tuesday’s match to help them get ready for tournament play.
“Although we got the win, I do not feel our team played their best. We made a lot of unforced and mental errors,” said Coach Dix. “These are things we can work on as we go into the tournament next week.”
The MVAC Tournament is set for April 22-23 at Elkin.
