With another school year quickly approaching, it is almost time to sign your child up for the upcoming Ashe County youth football season.
The first day of signups will be at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 12 at the Beaver Creek industrial field. This will also mark the first day of practice for third through sixth graders.
Parents can sign their children up each evening that week if they cannot make it on that first Monday.
Equipment will be given out on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and then practice will begin taking place at Family Central in Jefferson.
For first and second graders, parents can register them at any time that week, but the first practice and first official registration day for them will not be until Aug. 19.
All practices during the first week will begin at 5:30.
The cost to sign up for this year’s league is $75.
Things will be a little different this year than in years past. There will be a purple and silver team for the third and fourth graders as well as a purple and silver team for the fifth and sixth graders.
All Ashe teams will be playing in the newly formed Blue Ridge Football Conference, which means that instead of playing teams in Boone, Avery and other places as in previous years, the Ashe squads will face teams that are currently part of the same conference as the high school. Ashe will face all of the Wilkes County schools, Alleghany and Elkin. Starmount is not part of the youth football conference.
The first scrimmage of the season will be on Aug. 24 and it is mandatory that each player attend to be present for the weigh-in. The first group of games is set to start Sept. 7
Ashe teams will all play four home games. Two games will be played at Ashe County High School, one game will be played at Ashe County Middle School and the other game will be at Family Central. The Family Central games will be when the Ashe teams face each other.
The two teams with the best record in each age group will play for the league championship at Alleghany at the end of the season.
