Racers from all around the area competed against each other and battled time and the elements in the annual Blue Ridge Brutal race held Saturday.

A total of 401 riders registered for the races, which included a 50, 75 and 102-mile race through several mountain roads in Ashe County.

The race began at 8 a.m. at the Ashe Civic Center with every rider starting out there and then following the designated course for whatever race they signed up for.

The weather was truly unpredictable across the racing course. Riders hit hard rains in the eastern end of the county while the sun was shining as they came through Warrensville and headed across Buffalo Road towards Three Top Mountain and Todd.

According to the 2013 BRB 100-mile entry list, the highest finisher from last year’s race to return to this year’s event was Christian Platzl, 40, of Denver, N.C. Platzl finished in seventh place last year.

The Jefferson Post will post the final results as soon as they are made available.
