Playing without two of their best players, the varsity soccer team pulled together and got a very good defensive performance to earn a 2-0 victory over Elkin on Thursday.

Ashe continues to be without Miguel Ramos and was forced to play the Elks without leading scorer Cesar Ruiz.

It took the Huskies a little while to get the offense going, but Ashe finally got on the board in the 28th minute with a long shot from Gavin Woodie. Woodie was able to fire a shot to the far post by Elkin goalkeeper Jesus Rivera.

Just six minutes later, Kendall Wagner broke towards the net and got through the defense for another goal. Ashe carried a 2-0 lead into the second half.

Defenses took charge the rest of the way. Jamison Cline was faced with very few shots as Ashe’s back line held their ground very well.

Before the game could reach the full 80 minutes of play, a 30-minute lightning delay scattered players and fans for cover and then a second lightning delay ended the game about 10 minutes early, sealing the Husky victory.

Ashe is 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

This week, the Huskies travel to conference rival Wilkes Central on Wednesday and to Newton-Conover on Friday for the final non-conference tilt of the regular season.
