It looks like the women’s tennis team is here to stay near the top of the conference standings with another impressive win at Wilkes Central last Tuesday.
Ashe beat Central by an 8-1 score to notch its sixth win in a row and sixth conference win of the season.
“This was a big win for us and completes the first half of the conference season,” said Head Coach Larry Dix. “I think this win will also give us momentum going into our next match against East Wilkes who are undefeated and the only conference team that we have lost to this season.”
Ashe would have played them on Thursday, but the match was postponed due to rain until Monday.
Hallie Brown, Ashe’s top seed, took down Mary Hollis in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
“Hallie played very steady and patiently and won her long two-and-a-half hour match against a very good Wilkes Central player,” said Coach Dix.
In the second seeded match, it took a third set tiebreaker to decide the winner. Wilkes Central’s Mackenzie Ingle took the first set, 7-6, but Maggie Witherspoon battled back to dominate the second set with a 6-1 win. In the tiebreaker, Witherspoon came away with the 10-5 win.
“Maggie struggled and lost her first set in a tiebreaker, but came back to win the second set and the third set tiebreaker, showing again what it means to never give up,” said Dix.
Freshman Grace Miller scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over Madison Wilcox and fourth seeded Kasey Curcio battled the heat to beat Marissa Ingle, 6-1, 6-4.
Central’s Bri Roten scored the Lady Eagles’ only win of the day, a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mary Austin Tugman in the fifth seeded match.
Sixth seed Ella Copeland wrapped up the singles matches with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Stephanie Shinaman.
Ashe swept all three doubles matches to cap off the win. Brown and Witherspoon were 8-4 victors over Hollis and Roten. Miller and Tugman took down Wilcox and Rebekah Pendry, 8-0, and the team of Curcio and Copeland handed Shinaman and Emaleth Myer an 8-3 loss.
“I am so proud of this team and commend them for their efforts and positive attitude,” added Coach Dix.
Ashe played one exhibition match. Erin Griffin and Rae Zeller earned a 6-3 doubles victory.
The Lady Huskies will host North Wilkes on Tuesday and West Wilkes on Thursday.
