Cross country teams run strong

In the second cross country meet of the season, Ashe County performed very well with a first place finish in the women’s race and a second place finish in the men’s event last week at the high school.

The women’s team finished with 33 points, 13 points ahead of second place East Wilkes and 16 points ahead of third place Wilkes Central.

East Wilkes runner Taylor Tharpe won the race with a finishing time of 22:08. Wilkes Central’s Jordyn Halvorsen was second and Ashe’s Mac Church finished third with a time of 22:43.

The ladies also got good finishing positions from Vic Reed in fifth place (23:35), Alexes Armstrong in seventh (24:28) Tyler Eller in eighth (24:31) and Margot Mattix in 10th (25:48).

In the men’s race, the Huskies finished in second place overall with 46 points, just four points behind first place East Wilkes.

The Cardinals swept the top finishing spot in the two races. Will Jolly grabbed first, crossing the finish line in 17:38.

Ashe had three runners in the top 10. Andrew Tedder was second, finishing at 18:15. Gareth Berry finished seven with a time of 19:14 and R.J. Burke was 10th in a time of 20:39.
