This week is Ashe’s Homecoming and West Wilkes will be the opponent on Friday night.
Ashe puts its unblemished 2-0 conference record on the line against the Blackhawks, a team coming off of a 41-20 loss to Starmount last week.
West Wilkes enters the contest at 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. The Blackhawks have wins over Mitchell County and North Stokes to go with losses to North Iredell, Walkertown, Wilkes Central and Starmount.
The Blackhawks are led by quarterback Jeremiah Triplett and a pair of tailbacks, Jacob Woods and Chance Huffman.
“We did see them (West Wilkes) a little bit on tape, from what we did see they throw it around a lot and run a lot of option so defensively we’re going to have to play responsibility football and offensively we’ve just got to keep getting better and improving in every facet,” said Head Coach Brian Hampton after last week’s game.
Last week, West had a balanced rushing attack, getting 180 yards on 26 carries from those three athletes.
On the flip side, the Blackhawks struggled mightily to stop the run. The Rams ran for 329 yards, which included two different Starmount backs getting over 100 yards each.
Ashe is hoping to continue its strong defensive play. Ashe silenced Wilkes Central, and have given up the least points of any team in the MVAC.
Last season, the Blackhawks finished in fourth place in the MVAC, which include a 27-0 win over Ashe.
The Huskies hope to break a two-game scoreless streak against the Blackhawks. West also shut out the Huskies in 2011 by a 31-0 score.
Ashe’s last win over West Wilkes was in 2010 when the Huskies pulled off a 31-21 win. That loss kept West Wilkes from getting the top playoff seed from the 1A section of the conference as Elkin ended up having the better overall record and getting the higher seed.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from ACHS.
