The Lady Huskies will be well-represented at the 2A Midwest Regional after sweeping the Mountain Valley Conference 2A Championships last week at Elkin.
Hallie Brown took home the singles crown. Brown beat Angela Jordan from North Wilkes in the first round, 6-0, 6-0. In the semi-final round, the Ashe County junior beat Wilkes Central’s Marissa Ingle, 6-0, 6-3 to reach the finals.
In the championship match, Brown made quick word of Mary Hollis, defeating the Wilkes Central top seed in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Brown was also chosen as the MVAC Player of the Year, voted on by the coaches. She finished the regular season 14-4 overall and 14-2 in the MVAC.
“Hallie is very deserving of this award. She works hard, has a great attitude and is a wonderful role model for our younger athletes,” said Head Coach Larry Dix.
In the doubles championship, two Ashe teams faced off against each other. The tandem of Kasey Curcio and Ella Copeland beat Grace Miller and Mary-Austin Tugman, 7-5, 6-4 to win the championship.
Both doubles teams qualified for the regionals, as did Brown.
Maggie Witherspoon, who spent most of the season playing as Ashe’s second seed, made it to the semi-finals with a win over Alexa Bumgarner of West Wilkes before falling to Hollis.
“It was very exciting to have so many Ashe players in the finals, and to have two Ashe teams playing for the doubles championship is beyond description,” said Coach Dix. “I am so proud of all these players. All their hard work and extra effort paid off for them.”
Ashe will now turn its attention to the 2A Dual Team Playoffs that begin on Tuesday.
Individual regionals will start Oct. 18.
