The biggest crowd of the season so far at an ACHS soccer game saw two good teams fight it out for 100 minutes only to finish in a 1-1 tie.
Players and fans wore pink in honor of two soccer moms that lost their battle with breast cancer, and to bring overall awareness to the disease.
This game also marked the return of Miguel Ramos to the starting lineup. The junior missed the previous 18 games with a shoulder injury.
Ashe scored first in the 25th minute when Ramos drew a foul inside the scoring box, giving Ashe a penalty kick. Frank Ledezma scored easily to take a 1-0.
The score remained the same until the 52nd minute when Trevor Royall tied things up at 1-1 after a questionable out-of-bounds call gave Central a throw in that led to the goal. It appeared that the ball went off of a Wilkes Central player, but the official ruled that Ashe sweeper Alexis Ramos was the last one to touch the ball.
Ashe had a pair of corner kicks in the 56th and 68th minutes, but could not get a goal.
Defensively, Jamison Cline made some great saves down the stretch. A diving stop in the 60th minute kept the score tied.
With the game headed to overtime, Ashe was forced to play with one less player after A. Ramos got red carded and was out for the rest of the game.
Neither team got many good looks in the 20 minutes of overtime, resulting in the tie.
Ashe is now 12-6-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Wilkes Central is 11-4-2 overall and 9-1-1 in the MVAC.
Both teams have three matches remaining to determine who will be the MVAC Champion. Ashe faces East Wilkes at home, North Wilkes on the road and West Wilkes on the road. Wilkes Central hosts Elkin, Starmount and then travels to Alleghany.
