Chamber gives 2013 Outrageously Good Customer Service Awards

The Ashe County Chamber of Commerce held their Outrageously Good Customer Service Awards Breakfast Wednesday morning at Boondocks Brewing Tap Room and Restaurant, where local businesses and individuals were recognized for excellence in serving the public.

Chamber Board of Directors Chair Scott Ballard presented four awards, one for the “business” category, and three for “individual.”

Dillard said that, while the awards are given to “people who are good at what they do and have institutional knowledge,” they are less about I.Q., and more about E.Q. —“emotional intelligence.”

People who listen and are focused on reading and responding to customer needs are a big reason Ashe County visitors comment on how friendly the community is, he said.

Forest Ridge Assisted Living won the Outrageously Good Customer Service Award for a business. Its nomination read: “The staff show respect and love to all the residents, and really care about the care they give…Forest Ridge brings us together to feel like one big family.”

Executive Director Melissa Deskin accepted the award on behalf of Forest Ridge staff.

April Lambert, business office manager for Ashe Assisted Living, received an award in the individual category, and was nominated for her “welcoming, bubbling personality and the hospitality she always shows.”

Shauna Powers, customer service representative for SkyLine/SkyBest, won in the individual category. Nominated by a Crumpler man who has “never met Shauna face-to-face,” Powers was applauded for being “very responsive,” and “quick to understand the issue, offer remedies and execute the necessary actions.”

Derrick Douglas, branch manager for State Employees Credit Union, also won for an indivdual, with a nomination praising his staff’s teamwork and “positive attitude toward healing their customers.”

Honorable mention for the business category was given to Mountainview TV Center.

Honorable mentions for individuals were given to Julie McGunegle of West Jefferson Coffee Shop — “a tireless networker and supporter of all things positive” — and to Donna Brooks of Donna’s Country Kitchen, who “will always acknowledge you by your first name, and never forget your face or what you like to eat.”
