Two strong rushing teams will meet on the gridiron this Friday night when Starmount travels up the mountain to take on the Huskies.
Both teams are coming off of decisive victories. Ashe handled North Wilkes, 34-20, and Starmount throttled East Wilkes, 55-7.
Starmount passed the ball just one time last week, a 13-yard touchdown. Otherwise, all the yards came on the ground. The Rams carried the ball 53 times for 400 yards and seven touchdowns. Will Simpson led the way with 84 yards. Joe Walker added 77, John Johnson had 76 and starting quarterback Zach Freed had 48.
The Ram defense also took advantage of another long night of turnovers for East Wilkes, recovering five fumbles and grabbing one interception.
So far this season, Simpson leads the Rams with 704 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. Walker has 363 yards, Johnson has added 283 and Freed has ran for 278 yards.
Aaron Skeens has proven to be one of Starmount’s big home run threats in the backfield. He has carried the ball 45 times for 371 yards, getting nearly nine yards per carry.
Ashe got another big game from Johnathan Cox with 217 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Connor Bowers completed four passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns.
Both teams enter this game with a lot on the line.
Ashe can clinch at least a share of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Championship with a victory. Starmount can keep their hopes for a conference title alive with a win in this game and next week. At that point, both Ashe and Starmount would have one conference loss and share the 2013 championship.
“We’re fighting a good conference team in Starmount for basically the conference championship so we are exactly right where we want to be,” said Ashe County Head Coach Brian Hampton after last week’s win.
North Wilkes can also get a share of the title if Ashe were to slip up this week. The Vikings would need to win both of its final two games to have a shot at the top spot.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. from ACHS.
