A late model, blue Dodge Caravan wrecked into an embankment along N.C. 88 near Ernie Carpenter’s Construction at 1:35 p.m. Friday.

The driver was Fermin Martinez, 24, of Lansing. Two other riders were in the van with him, according to N.C. Highway patrolman Chuck Olive.

Olive said the van was heading west on N.C. 88 when it hit a guardrail in the left lane, crossed back onto its side of the road and into the embankment.

Martinez was arrested and charged with DWI, no operator’s license and reckless driving. The two passengers will not face charges, according to Olive.

Olive estimated the van was driving 55 miles per hour. The van had tags from Carter County, Tenn.

N.C. 88 was blocked off from 1:35 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., after the car was towed out of the embankment.

The Warrensville Volunteer Fire Department, Ashe County Sheriff’s department and N.C. Highway Patrol responded to the wreck.
