Youth wrestling in Ashe County is bigger and better than ever, thanks to Ashe County Middle School Head Coach Alex Wray.
Coach Wray and his Ashe County Mat Monsters features young grapplers from the age of four through 13, with one goal in mind.
“We’re trying to get kids in the county to come out and wrestle,” said Wray.
Right now, the Mat Monsters have 20 boys and two girls on the team and are reaching out for community support as the season continues.
On Dec. 23, the Mat Monsters wants everybody to come out to Pizza Hut from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., where 10-percent of all proceeds will be donated to the wrestling team.
Coach Wray said the money raised on that night will go towards getting singlets, shoes and headgear for all team members.
“This team has future Bulldogs and future Huskies on it, we want them to have all the gear to compete,” Wray said. “We want to look the part.”
The youth program under Wray will expand even more than this season as he plans on taking his team to compete in the state tournament.
Wrestlers on the Mat Monster team practice and compete all year long.
“Wrestling year-round is the only way to get better,” Wray added.
