Former Ashe County Husky wide receiver Greyson Wells will be suiting up in the NCAA Division II National Championship game this Saturday in Florence, Ala.

Wells is a sophomore at Lenoir-Rhyne and is the team’s leading receiver.

Although the Bears are a very run-heavy offense, Wells has been the go-to guy on passing plays. The sophomore leads Lenoir-Rhyne with 17 catches for 317 yards and five touchdowns.

For a team that runs the ball so much, Wells has also been relied on to be a good blocker on the outside and down field. The Bears average 378 rushing yards per game.

It has been an outstanding season for the Bear program. After losing the season opener to Concord, 18-10, the Bears have reeled off 13 straight wins.

After 10 regular season wins and three playoff wins, the Bears find themselves just one more win from the national championship.

The Bears beat conference rival Carson-Newman, 27-20, to get to the quarterfinals where they upended North Alabama, 42-39. In the semifinals last weekend, the Bears simply outclassed West Chester with a 42-14 win, setting up Saturday’s game against Northwest Missouri State.

The NMSU Bearcats are undefeated on the season, and have won all but one game by at least a touchdown. NMSU got the top seed while Lenoir-Rhyne was the second seed.

Kickoff for the game will be at noon and it will be televised live on ESPN 2.
