Even playing without two key members of the team, the Lady Huskies easily handled Alleghany by a 59-27 score.
Junior Hallie Brown and sophomore Ashton Lee were sick and missed the game, but the rest of the team stepped up to get Ashe’s first Mountain Valley Conference win.
“I was really pleased with how well we played together,” said Head Coach Laura Foster. “We did a good job on the boards, Chloe and Syd played really well off the bench for us.”
Ashe was able to dress just seven players for the game.
Paige Spell’s 24 points came at a time where Ashe really needed the scoring with two starters out. The junior was 9-19 shooting and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
Savannah Brooks narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. Morgan Hudler finished with eight points and six rebounds, Sydney Kate Grubb had six points and three assists off the bench and Chloe Sullivan also added six points and five boards off the Ashe bench.
Junior Abby Lopp had four points and eight rebounds while junior Tyler Eller rounded out the scoring with three points and four rebounds.
Kayla Teffert led Alleghany with seven points. Molly Andrews chipped in six and Faith Reeves finished with six.
The Lady Huskies are 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the MVAC. Alleghany currently sits at 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the MVAC.
Ashe will host Hibriten in the first round of the Colvard Oil Holiday Classic on Friday evening. Conference play resumes on Friday, Jan. 3 at Starmount.
