The first baby in Ashe County was born at 4:53 p.m. on Friday Jan. 3 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.

Mia Galvan, weighed seven pounds and one ounce and was 19.25 inches tall. She was born to Miranda and Pablo Galvan of Sparta.

Miranda described the experience as not easy, but “well worth it.”

“I have had a very supported husband and my mom and dad supported me and a lot of family,” Miranda said.

The baby was delivered by Dr Melinda Wonsick. This is Miranda’s first child, but Mia will have two half-brothers, Zane and Kyle.

“(Dr. Wonsick) has been my doctor for several years,” Miranda said. “I love her and all of the nurses here.”

Also waiting at home for Mia will be a puppy named Doug.
