Five local hunters are taking home cash prizes as winners of Jefferson Post’s “Bux 4 Bucks” online photo contest.

Online voters choose winners in the categories of Best Doe, Best Buck, Best Game Bird, Best Deer and one Overall Winner for most votes in total.

“There were so many great photos to choose from,” said Jeff Day, owner of category sponsor Day’s Body Shop in Jefferson, “I’m glad I didn’t have to pick the winner.”

Dale Testerman of Warrensville was the Overall Winner for the eight-point buck he bagged after a long day of hunting in Ashe. Although unofficial, a taxidermist estimated it to score 145 to 160.

Testerman won $100 compliments of title sponsor Grashal Outdoors of Boone.

All category winners were awarded $40 compliments of sponsors Day’s Body Shop, Ashe County Republican Party, Walmart and Western Carolina Eye Associates, P.A., of Jefferson.

Kolten Taylor, age 6, took home a prize for Best Doe, his first deer, which he took down in November 2012 on a hunting trip with his father.

Troy Wantland won Best Buck, which he hunted in his hometown of Lansing with his wife, who initially mistook the buck for a dog.

“It ended up being the biggest buck I ever killed, but it was my favorite hunt because I got to share it with my wife, even if she did think my trophy, at first, was a dog,” Wantland posted.

Andy Elliott of Jefferson, who won Best Game Bird, is pictured with the 21 pound turkey he hunted from Rich Hill Road in Creston.

“I love the sound of a turkey gobbling and drumming, it just gets your heart pounding,” Elliott said of the game bird which took him just 30 minutes to bag after calling.

John Cornett won Best Bear, for his daunting 415 pound game killed in 2012.

Thank you to our terrific sponsors, and congratulations to our winners.
