North Wilkes kept its unblemished Mountain Valley Conference record intact with a 53-43 victory over Ashe County on Friday night.
“North is well-coached, they defend, they are experienced and they have so many offensive weapons. That is why they are the best team in our conference,” said Ashe Head Coach Laura Foster.
Taylor Wyatt led all scorers with 19 points and teammate Allison Livengood scored 15 for North Wilkes. Allie Church scored nine points and Alley Shumate added six.
Morgan Hudler led Ashe with 10 points. Hallie Brown added nine points and four rebounds and Paige Spell had nine points, three assists and three steals.
Sophomore Savannah Brooks scored eight points and had nine boards, but was in foul trouble for much of the second half after getting her fourth foul in the third quarter. Abby Lopp scored four points and grabbed nine rebounds as well. Tyler Eller rounded out the Ashe scoring with three points.
“We played right with them for the majority of the game,” said Coach Foster. “North made a big run in the third quarter but never could pull away from us. We would not let them. I am very pleased with our effort.”
The Lady Huskies shot 33-percent from the field and committed 16 turnovers.
Coach Foster also pointed out Ashe was without Ashton Lee who had to miss the game due to an ankle injury.
Ashe is now 10-9 overall and 5-4 in the MVAC. North Wilkes is 14-4 overall and 9-0 in the MVAC.
Ashe will host East Wilkes on Tuesday and Elkin on Thursday. Thursday’s game will also be the annual “Hoops 4 Hope” game where the women’s basketball team will be raising awareness for breast cancer in the community. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink to support the cause.
