Coach Alex Wray and his “Mat Monster” youth wrestling team will be hosting their second fundraiser to continue to bring in money and support for the program.

Previously, money was raised to get kids uniforms and headgear for the season.

This time, the goal is to raise money to help the team travel to the state tournament held in Concord on Saturday, March 8.

The fundraiser will take place on Monday, March 3 at Pizza Hut in Jefferson. 10-percent of all sales between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. will be donated to the team, plus all tips to waiters and waitresses are given to the team as well.

Coach Wray has had his team working hard all year long, and going to the state tournament next weekend will be the biggest step yet for the young wrestlers.

“We want to see where we stand with the other teams that will be there,” said Wray.

Wray estimates that between 80 and 90 youth wrestling squads will compete in the tournament.

The next goal for the Mat Monsters will be to compete in the national tournament. Coach Wray sees this state tournament as a big test for the team and something that will prepare them for that next level of competition.
