The Ashe County Lady Huskies will hope to rebound from a four-game losing skid to open the 2014 season.
Ashe fell at home to Elkin, 11-0 after five innings of play. Lady Elk starter Cayley Shoemaker allowed just two hits in five innings with seven strikeouts. Mattie Blackburn drove in two runs and scored another to lead the offensive attack.
Melanie Day started for Ashe and pitched three innings while surrendering five runs (two earned). Abigail Miller got hit hard in relief, allowing six runs (four earned) in two innings. Miller did account for one of Ashe’s two hits. Hannah Blevins got the other one.
Next up, Ashe played Starmount and nearly rallied for a win, but fell just short in the seventh inning to lose, 7-5.
Blevins smacked a homerun and finished with three hits in four trips to the plate. Miller added an RBI and freshman Lynsey Aldridge had two hits and scored a run.
Miller suffered the loss. She pitched four innings and allowed six runs on seven hits with three walks. Courtney Sawyer pitched in relief and surrendered one unearned run in two innings and recorded three strikeouts.
Olivia Greene pitched all seven innings for Starmount and earned the victory. Greene allowed five runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts.
Morgan Brown had three hits and three RBI’s while Lakin Shores knocked in a pair of runs on two hits.
Most recently last Friday night, the Lady Huskies traveled to Wilkes Central and were defeated by an 11-0 score in six inning.
After keeping the game close through the first five frames, Wilkes Central exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Katelyn Wyatt earned the Eagles’ victory, pitching six shutout innings while giving up just one Ashe hit, a double to Sloan Elliott. Wyatt struck out nine and did not walk anyone.
All 11 runs went down as unearned after three Ashe County errors.
Miller pitched five innings and allowed five runs on two hits and six walks. Sawyer pitched two-thirds of an innings allowing six runs.
Ashe sits 0-4 overall and in conference. The Huskies will face North Wilkes at home on Friday.
