In a pair of very competitive conference matches, the men’s golf team has finished in fifth place each time on the links.

On April 10 at Mountain Aire Golf Course, Alleghany came away with the win. The Trojans shot 164 as a team, good enough for a three-shot victory over Wilkes Central. Elkin took third place with a score of 170. Starmount was fourth with a 171 and Ashe was fifth with a team total of 183. East Wilkes (191), West Wilkes (201) and North Wilkes (208) rounded out the rest of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference teams.

Elkin’s Josiah Blevins fired a 36 to have the top score of the afternoon. Dylon Wooten from Alleghany finished two shots back in second and Wilkes Central’s Zach Caudill finished three strokes back.

Hunter Maines (Alleghany) and Chandler Metz (Wilkes Central) finished in a tie for fourth with a score of 40. There was a four-way tie for sixth place between Starmount golfers Nick Gunnell and Brady Hunter, West Wilkes’ Andrew Cheek and Wilkes Central’s Geoff Edwards. All four golfers finished five shots back with a 41.

Ashe’s top performances came from Abel Warner and Jacob Worley who both shot a 44. Caleb Carter finished with a 47, Ethan Warner shot 48, Brandon Badger shot a 50 and Zach Lawrence also ended up with a 50.

Monday’s match at Oakwoods Country Club was just as competitive with Elkin winning the match with a team score of 169, two shots better than second place Alleghany and seven shots ahead of Wilkes Central. Starmount (177) was fourth and Ashe’s score of 181 was good enough for fifth. East Wilkes (193), West Wilkes (199) and North Wilkes (216) completed the team scores.

Blevins was once again the individual winner after he shot a 38. Elkin’s Cory Anderson was second, one shot back and Cheek placed third, two shots behind. Gunnell was fourth with a 41 and four golfers finished in a tie for fifth. Edwards finished with a 42 as did Caudill. Hunter shot a 42 and Alleghany’s Austin Hawkins had the Trojan top score with a 42.

Wooten shot a 43 and teammate Tanner Rutherford finished with the same score in a tie for ninth.

A. Warner and Worley led the Husky golfers with scores of 44. Lawrence had a 46, E. Warner a 47, Carter a 53 and Badger a 56.
