TODD-A Fleetwood man was killed while another man was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center with serious injuries following an early Sunday morning car crash in Todd.
That’s according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, which said the single vehicle crash happened sometime between 3:30 a.m. and 7:13 a.m. Oct. 9.
Erick Barcenas, 18, and Luis Ramos, 19, both of Fleetwood, were traveling north in a 1999 Subaru Impreza on NC-194 just north of the intersection of Railroad Grade Road when the accident occurred, according to North Carolina State Trooper Kevin Aldridge.
Barcenas was driving while Ramos was in the front passenger seat, according to Aldridge.
The pair traveled around a left hand curve, went off the road to the right and struck a tree, Aldridge said.
“Both men were restrained but it was a side impact with the tree and something a seat belt isn’t going to offer as much help with,” Aldridge said.
A passing motorist saw the wreck and alerted authorities, Aldridge said. Ramos was pronounced dead at the scene while Barcenas was rushed by helicopter to Johnson City. At last check, Aldridge said Barcenas was in critical condition.
Both men were once accomplished athletes at Ashe County High School, where Barcenas played soccer and Ramos excelled at football and track. Each graduated as members of the class of 2016.
Aldridge said he did not believe speed to be a factor in the accident. It remains under investigation.
