Aug. 25

5pm-Ashe Senior Center will host a 50’s Sock Hop and cake walk. Cost is $5. The top male and female 50’s best dressed will win a prize. Tickets are available at front desk or can be purchased at the door. Music provided by Harry Heart-Attack and the Defibrillators.

7:30pm-Ashe Civic Center Ashe County Little Theatre presents the Church Basement Ladies. A celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there, Church Basement Ladies is a musical comedy featuring four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1965.

Aug. 26

1pm-Virginia Carolina High School Reunion at Blue Ridge Dinner Theater 9331 Highway 16 South, Glendale Springs. 1-5pm. The Class of 1967 are invited to celebrate their 50th reunion.The meal will be served buffet style by the Theater staff and will be prepared by the Winners Circle Restaurant and will consist of Fried Chicken, Roast Beef, vegetables, Dessert and drink. 5pm-Ashe County Arts Council September Gallery Crawl. Crawlers are invited to stroll the streets, visit the galleries, view the downtown murals and take advantage of the downtown restaurants. 11am- Elk Knob Community Headwaters Day Enjoy a day filled with live music, games, nature activities, hikes, wagon rides, craft and cultural demonstrations, hands-on activities, history and food. Join us between 11 am and 3 pm for our 13th Annual Elk Knob Headwaters Community Day sponsored by the Elk Knob Community Heritage Organization. Enjoy a day of cultural heritage and pride. Please note that if you are interested in participating in the potluck, you should bring a dish of food to share and plan to be at the park by noon.

9am- Ashe County Arts Council and Ashe Public Library On the Same Page Literary Festival celebrates reading and writing. Opportunities for authors to share their work, for readers a chance to meet authors, for writers to engage in workshops and for lovers of the written word to celebrate reading! Scheduled are author talks, workshops, storytelling, lunch, and more. Most events are free with a couple of lunch fees. 1pm- West Jefferson’s Annual Antiques Fair Whether you like furniture from the 1800s, war memorabilia, or classic records from “back in the day” – you just might find all that and more at the West Jefferson Antiques Fair. It’s a great event for the whole family. If you can’t make it Friday the 15th 1pm-8pm, the fair will still be open Saturday the 16th 8am-5pm. Stroll the streets of historic downtown West Jefferson and find a unique treasure you simply can’t live without!

Ashe Senior Center Travel Club

Ashe’s Farmers Market is every Saturday from April 15th – October 28th, 8am until 1pm. There you will find anything from local grown produce to hand craft pottery, woven baskets, knitted and crocheted items, quilts, jewelry, flower art, and soy candles, along with organic and vegan soaps and body products. Fine wood crafts are prominent and include everything from skillfully crafted cutting boards to fine furniture. The Ashe County Farmers Market is something you certainly don’t want to miss!

The Ashe County Sharing Center’s Northwest Ashe Mobile Pantry will be in Creston and Lansing the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Creston Volunteer Fire Station and Phoenix Baptist Church, 10:30 to 11:30 am. Must be a resident of Creston or Lansing to qualify.

Ashe Piecemakers Quilt Guild– meets at 2pm on the second Thursday of each month at the Ashe County Senior Center. After social time, the group has show-and-tell, a business meeting and a program. The program may include a guest speaker, a trunk show or a mini-workshop.

Literacy Movement– Western Carolina Eye Associates in Jefferson has recently partnered with Ashe County Partnership for Children. The partnership will provide opportunities to ensure and encourage children reading. Books are provided by the partnership and rotated every three weeks to foster the interest in books. Peak Creek Ruritan Club meets at 6:30pm on the first Monday of each month at the Peak Creek Ruritan Community Center, 7062 Hwy. 88 East, Laurel Springs. Wings of Hope is a support group for mothers offering compassion and help and healing from postpartum depression to the loss of a child or infant. The group typically meets at 6pm the last Wednesday of each month at the Ashe Memorial Hospital Library.
