Ashe County Wreck Report Aug. 16-29

ASHE COUNTY — The following accidents that occurred between Aug. 16 and Aug. 29 were reported by the North Carolina Highway Patrol and are considered public record.

Aug. 16

Gregory Allen Jones, of 944 N. Fork River Road, Lansing, was traveling east on S.R. 1501 when he ran off the right shoulder of the road and struck the ditch. The driver state he swerved to miss a deer.

Aug. 18

Kenneth James Ham, of 997 Rip Shin Road, Lansing, was stopped for debris on U.S. 221 in West Jefferson when William Fred Vannoy, of 887 Railroad Grade, Todd, failed to reduce speed and struck Ham. Vannoy was charged with failure to reduce speed.

Aug. 19

Larry Wayne Laws, of 8801 W N.C. Highway 268, Boomer, was charged with careless and reckless and improper passing after being involved in two collisions with two Ashe County Sheriff’s deputies.

Aug. 20

Hunter Delenin Hogg, of 113 Hamilton Drive, Jefferson, was traveling south on U.S. 221 when he crossed the center-line and went off the road to the left. Hogg left the scene prior to the officer’s arrival. He was later located and said he was dodging a deer at the time of the accident. Hogg was charged with driving left of center and exceeding the posted speed. His 2002 Nissan sustained $3,500 in damages.

Aug. 21

Michael Paul Bennett, of 206 Holly Ridge Road, West Jefferson, and Kevin Dirk Burgess, of 6483 N.C. 16 South, Jefferson, collided mirrors in a curve on S.R. 1331. No citations were issued.

Keith Roy Allen, of 3217 Mount Zion Church Road, Mebane, was attempting to turn left on U.S. 221 when Steven James Brown, of 595 Conley Cheek Road, Fleetwood, collided with him. Allen was charged with failure to yield. Both vehicles sustained $1,000 in damages.

Aug. 22

Mickey Lane South, of 1023 Teaberry Road, Warrensville, was traveling north on N.C. 194 in a 1996 Freightliner, when he ran off the road to the right and struck a ditch before overturning. South was charged to failure to maintain lane control.

Matthew Benjamin Hartzog, of 448 Old Wilkes Road, Glendale Springs, was slowing to make a right turn into a private drive from S.R. 1003 when William Francis Morgan, of 250 Arnett Hollow Road, Vilas ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch and overturned before striking Hartzong. Morgan was charged with failure to maintain lane control. Morgan’s Toyota sustained $6,500 in damages while Hartzog’s 2008 Nissan incurred $1,500 in damages.

Aug. 23

Stacy Eller Halsey, of 1134 Troutdale Highway, Mouth of Wilson, Va., was slowing for traffic ahead when Mackenzie Shepard Alff, of 274 High Meadows Lane, Fleetwood, failed to reduce speed and struck Halsey. No citations were issued.

Aug. 24

Larry Scott Powers, of 141 Gwendoline Lane, Fleetwood, failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of the 2001 Dodge that was driven by Brandon Paul Shepherd, of 884 Greensboro Road, Crumpler, on U.S. 221. Powers was cited for failure to reduce speed.

Matthew Shane Duncan, of 511 W. 5th Ave., Lexington, was traveling north on S.R. 1573 when he ran off the right shoulder and struck the ditch. The 2008 Subaru sustained an estimated $4,000 in damages. Duncan was cited for failure to maintain lane control.

Aug. 25

Richard Carol Blackburn, of 451 Don Walters Road, Jefferson, was attempting to turn into the parking lot of the Burger King in Jefferson when Deborah Gantt Fishel, of 1461 John Halsey Road, Grassy Creek, failed to reduce speed and collided with Blackburn. Fishel was charged with failure to reduce speed.

Ruby Eller Ham, of 542 Deep Ford Road, Lansing, was attempting to turn onto U.S. 221 when David Clinton Parker, of 1723 Macedonia Church Road, Monroe, collided with Ham. Parker was charged with failure to yield.

Aug. 26

Christopher Dakota Staley, of 2136 Rip Shin Road, Lot B, Lansing, was entered a curve on Big Windfall Road in Lansing when he skidded into the opposite lane of travel, over-corrected and collided with Chadwick Wayne Bennet, of 1745 Little Windfall Road, Lansing. Staley then reportedly ran off the road on the right, struck a ditch and an embankment and came to final rest. Staley was charged with failure to maintain lane control.
