FLEETWOOD-Sunday night social media speculation was confirmed this evening as the National Weather Service’s Blacksburg, VA office said an EF-1 tornado did touch down in both Ashe and Wilkes Counties on Oct. 8.

The tornado touched down between 6:45 and 7 p.m. from just west of Harley in Wilkes County north to near Idlewild in Ashe County, according to a release by the NWS.

It had an estimated maximum sustained wind speed of 105 miles per hour with a maximum path width of 300 yards. Its path was just short of 7 miles long.

The storm left a swath of homes in Wilkes and Ashe Counties without power Sunday night, with damage to trees, homes, automobiles and property reported in the Phillips Gap Road, Idlewild Road and Park Vista Road areas of Fleetwood.

No injuries were reported.
