Ashe County could soon find itself in the national spotlight –albeit for all the wrong reasons- if a group of notorious religious zealots make good on their promise to protest the funeral of slain U.S. soldier Dillon Baldridge, who is scheduled to be put to rest tomorrow in Jefferson.
According a press release that was posted to godhatesfags.com, members of the Westboro Baptist Church are planning to descend on Ashe County on Friday to protest Baldridge’s funeral due to the group’s belief that the killing of American soldiers is directly connected to God’s hatred of America.
“Military funerals have become pagan orgies of idolatrous blasphemy, where they pray to the dunghill gods of Sodom and play taps to a fallen fool,” the group wrote in a prepared statement.
The group said they will “peacefully preach” their message in “lawful proximity” to the memorial of Baldridge at the Ashe High Auditorium.
“Dillon Baldridge gave his life for the Constitutional right of WBC to warn America. To deny us our First Amendment rights to warn our neighbours (sic) is to declare to the world that Dillon died in vain, and that America is a nation of proud, sodomite hypocrites.”
Although the group claims the press release is a prepared professional statement, the announcement contained numerous spelling and grammatical errors.
Aside from poor grammar, Westboro Baptist Church has a well-known history of protesting military funerals.
