The Ashe County Public Library has announced the book that will be the focus of its annual Community Read event.

“Wool,” written by New York Times Best Selling Author Hugh Howey, will be read as part of the month-long celebration.

“We are very excited to use this book for our Community Read,” said Kim Grindrod, adult services librarian for the Ashe County Public Library.

In addition, several changes are coming for the Community Read. This year, the month-long event will kick off May 31, where the library will host Shakespeare in the Park. Other events will take place throughout the month of June, as opposed to late August and early September.

Grindrod said the change comes as a way to expand the event to the community and not have it be so close to the library’s annual literary festival, On the Same Page.

“I guess the biggest focus for changing the date was we really wanted to open up the community read to more ages,” she said.

Grindrod said the book is appealing not only to the adults in the community, but young adults as well. Changing the date helps have the event at a time when students and parents are not starting back to school and have just kicked off summer.

“We wanted to create a broader appeal to the community,” Grindrod said. “The focus in the community wasn’t really on the Community Read in September.”

Some of the events around this year’s community read include expanding the event’s public readings. Last year, readings were done at Phipp’s Store in Lansing. In addition, there will be public readings in Todd this year.

Also, there are plans to have a Renaissance Fair during the Farmer’s Market and Howey will visit the Ashe Public Library on Saturday, June 28 to discuss his book.

Grindrod said the library has copies of books that they will be distributing, so when people in the community finish reading they can pass it on to others to read. The books will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. In addition, the library will have audio copies of the book.

“It is my hope that the Community Read allows the library to provide access to the book for everyone at the same time,” Grindrod said.

The community-wide event also could not be done without help from the Friends of the Ashe County Library, Grindrod said.

“The Friends of the Ashe County Library are funding the entire Community Read,” Grindrod said. “Without their help, this event could not happen.”
