Ashe County Assistant Director of Economic Development Cory Osborne announced his resignation yesterday in a letter to outgoing County Manager and Director of Economic Development Dr. Pat Mitchell.
“It is with a great deal of deliberation and reflection that I submit my resignation from the position of Assistant Director of Economic Development effective Sept. 5, 2013. I would like to thank both yourself and the Board of Commissioners for the opportunity to have served the citizens and businesses of Ashe County over the past year…and wish the best for the County's economic development efforts moving forward,” Osborne wrote.
Osborne's announcement follows Mitchell's own resignation as County Manager Tuesday in response a 3-2 motion by the Board of Commissioners Monday that she resign or be dismissed.
Wednesday, Mitchell also resigned her position as Director of Economic Development in a letter to BOC Chairman Larry Rhodes.
“…it has come to my attention there is concern among the Commissioners that perhaps they dictated a resignation/termination to just one of my positions — that of County Manager. And while that is the case according the motion, I certainly interpreted the option presented to me that it would affect both positions,” Mitchell wrote.
Mitchell was appointed County Manager in January 2012, but retained her position as Director of Economic Development, which she had held since 2004.
Osborne, who received his Masters of Public Administration from Appalachian State University in May, interned under Mitchell beginning August 2012. He was named Assistant Director of Economic Development in December 2012.
Osborne could not be reached for comment.
