Each year 4-H’ers from across North Carolina go to 4-H Millstone Camp in Ellerbe on the fourth weekend in September to compete in the state 4-H Target Shooting Sports Tournament.


Participants compete in various disciplines which include shotgun, rifle (Open Sight/Telescopic/Sporter), air rifle, air pistol, muzzleloading, and Archery (Compound/Recurve). There were approximately 250 youth, ages 9-18 that competed in the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013.


In order for Ashe County youth to compete at the state tournament they were required to compete and place at the 4-H Regional Target Shooting Sports Tournament in Polk County on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, where there were over 500 youth.


Ashe County 4-H 10 Ring Target Shooting Sports was represented by Matthew Barr (Senior Rifle T), Mick Blackburn (Junior Shotgun and Rifle Sporter), Dalton Bosley (Senior Shotgun and Rifle T), Chance Burgess (Senior Muzzleloading), Ethan Council (Junior Archery Recurve), Cody Dancy (Junior Shotgun), Matthew Dixon (Senior Archery), Noah Gouge (Junior Archery and Shotgun), Jasey Ham (Senior Rifle T and Archery), and Matthew Hoffman (Senior Rifle T). At the state tournament, Ethan Council placed first in individual and first place overall in Junior Archery Recurve. Noah Gouge placed second in individual and third overall in Junior Shotgun. Participants who placed first, second and third received gold, silver, or bronze plated medallions.


Matthew Dixon and Dalton Bosley have been invited to compete for the chance to represent North Carolina at the National 4-H Target Shooting Sports Invitation in Nebraska in Summer 2014. The tryouts will be Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, in Ellerbe.
