As any adult knows, keeping kids busy on days with no school can be a huge challenge.
The Ashe County 4-H Afterschool Full Day Program strives to provide quality full day care on teacher workdays for children in Ashe County, grades kindergarten through sixth grades.
The 4-H Afterschool Full Day program is available at each of the elementary 4-H Afterschool programs from 6:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. on scheduled teacher work days.
This year we are offering something new…on planned teacher workdays we want to combine the kindergarten through sixth grade students together, at one school, and have large group activities.
The first planned teacher workday was held on Friday, Oct. 25, and offered the perfect opportunity for the first 4-H Fall Festival. Fall Festivals are held at schools, churches, and other organizations …why not 4-H?
We planned and planned. The children had a blast. Pizza for lunch, cupcakes for snack, games and prizes galore….they even got to show off their Halloween costumes.
We danced and painted pumpkins (donated by Sexton Farms) and even our faces. Micah Orfield, Ashe County Extension Agent, Agriculture, brought a sheep out for the kids to meet.
The 4-H Fall Festival turned out to be a huge success. We would like to thank Westwood Elementary School and their excellent staff for providing us a home for our festival this year. Also, many thanks to our five 4-H Ashe County Middle School Afterschool Program Volunteers: Sadie and Bailey C., Emma S., Juan J., and Taley D. – we could not have done it without your help. Thank you to Doug Goss for driving the bus and providing transportation and to Mrs. Jaramillo for all of her hard work.
We are already planning for the next Full Day/Teacher Workday scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 27. We’re thinking pajama party with a movie, popcorn, and hot chocolate at Blue Ridge Elementary School.
