The Ashe County Chamber of Commerce has issued a warning to area businesses to be on guard against a scam related to the production of area maps.
“One member (of the Chamber) was subjected to it,” Cabot Hamilton, executive director of the Chamber, said. “She received a phone call and was led to believe this company was trying to get her to buy an ad on the map and they promised a supply of maps.”
According to Hamilton, the Chamber member was contacted by a group calling itself Marketing Pros who claimed to be doing work on behalf of Liberty Marketing.
Liberty Marketing is a company based in Arlington, Texas that works with local chambers, city and county governments and tourism bureaus to publish detailed city, county and lake maps.
While the Chamber has worked with Liberty Marketing in the past, they have not contracted with a company to produce maps for 2014.
Hamilton said a representative from the company calling itself Marketing Pros took down the woman’s credit card information to advertise on the map and promised a supply of free maps.
“When she called back to see where the maps were, they (Marketing Pros) seemed confused,” Hamilton said.
An online search didn’t reveal an active map-making or advertising company called Marketing Pros.
“The Chamber is not doing anything with that company,” Hamilton said. “We want to make other members aware there could be an issue.”
