Ashe County citizens are trying to harness the power of social media while at the same time attempting to change the minds of those that decided to close the Lowes Foods store in West Jefferson.
With roughly a month left until the closing date announced for the store (Sept. 19), a group of concerned community members decided to make a Facebook Page and titled it “Save West Jefferson’s Lowes Food.” The page was created on Aug. 17.
In the first two days, the page already received over 200 “likes” from people who do not want to see their favorite grocery store close down while also trying to save the jobs of those who are faced with losing their income.
Group members have encouraged people to share the page with others in the area and most importantly, reach out and contact Lowes Foods to express to the company how important the store is in the community and how much they enjoy shopping there.
The group page has posted the phone number, email address and Twitter account information for Lowes Foods to reach out in hopes of changing the company’s mind about the decision to close the store.
Lowes Foods announced on Aug. 12 that four North Carolina stores would be closed. Along with the store in West Jefferson, stores in Cary, Gastonia and Shelby received the bad news that their stores would also be shut down.
