This week, the North Carolina Coaches Association put together its roster of coaches for the annual East-West All-Star games, held each summer.
The 2014 West football team has a familiar name on it as current Ashe County Husky Assistant Coach Keith Phillips was named as one of the six coaches for the squad.
“Surprise was the first thing I felt,” said Coach Phillips. “The director of the coaching clinic called me while I was at the beach to tell me last week.”
Scott Young of West Rowan will be the head coach. Phillips will be joined by Brett Chappell of Pisgah, North Davidson’s Mark Holcomb, Wilkes Central’s Jeremy Funderburk and Lin Stadler from Rockingham County HS as assistants.
Coach Phillips said that normally, the coaches on the East and West All-Star teams are typically head coaches at schools. Phillips thinks he may very well be the first assistant coach at a school to be on the all-star team.
Phillips has been coaching football since 1988 where he started out on the staff at Ashe Central High School. When the schools consolidated, Phillips immediately made the move to Ashe County High School.
The first coaches meeting for the 2014 East-West Game will take place sometime in September, where the staff will get to work selecting players for the game.
“Coaches in the western half of the state nominate players to participate in the game, and it is our job to select the 31 best players for the team and go from there,” said Coach Phillips.
“Coach Young has already emphasized that we not only base our selections on athleticism, but also on character,” added Phillips. “We’re not just looking for good players, but also good people.”
Players eligible for the game will be athletes that are seniors this upcoming football season.
Overall, Coach Phillips is excited for the opportunity and looking forward to the process.
“I’m very pleased to be working with these coaches and this caliber of athlete. It’s not every day that you get to work with a whole team of great athletes,” said Phillips.
The coaches meeting will also determine the responsibilities and the coaching position for each of the five assistants.
