Cougars edge Huskies in OT

Overtime games have not been friendly to Ashe County High School over the past week.
The Huskies played host to Alexander Central on Tuesday, but saw the Cougars come away with the 1-0 win in overtime.
Ashe started out the contest getting some good pressure on the offensive end. Cesar Ruiz and Victor Melo had shots that were just off target from the net.
After that, Alexander Central’s goalie Conner Fox made a handful of great saves on shots from Ruiz, Frank Ledezma and Eric Barcenas later in the half.
The game entered the second half in a scoreless tie. Teams controlled the ball in the neutral field for much of the second half, until the 70th minute when Ruiz broke away from the defense but saw his shot go wide left of the goal.
In the first 10-minute frame of overtime, Ashe was once again stonewalled by Fox’s goalkeeping. Ruiz and Jamie Weaver had shots stopped by the keeper, including a diving save to preserve the 0-0 tie in the 88th minute.
The Cougars turned up the offensive pressure in the second overtime. In the 96th minute, just four minutes left in the game, freshman forward Conner Whisnant buried a shot into the lower left corner past Ashe keeper Jamison Cline.
This win was the first of the season for Alexander Central. The Cougars are now 1-4-1 overall.
Ashe dropped to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in home contests.
Next week, Ashe will play three matches, including the conference opener. The Huskies will travel to Alleghany on Monday before hosting Oak Hill Academy on Tuesday and Elkin on Thursday.
