In a match that came down to the final doubles game of the day, Ashe came away with a big 5-4 victory over the Lady Elks.

Grace Miller and Mary Austin Tugman were playing against Makayla Dimette and Ally Gentry in the second doubles match, and the final match overall left going. It took a tiebreaker to decide the match as it was tied at 8-8. The Ashe duo held on for the 7-5 tiebreak win and the match victory.

“They (Miller and Tugman) illustrated what it means to never give up. I am so proud of this team and their efforts,” said Head Coach Larry Dix.

Ashe captured wins in four of the six singles matches.

Top seeded Hallie Brown dropped the first set, but roared back to win the second set, 6-3, and the third set tiebreaker, 10-8, over Payton Nicholson

Second seeded Maggie Witherspoon beat Miracle Walters in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, and third seeded Miller also won her match in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-3 score over Dimmette.

Gentry earned a singles win over Tugman for Elkin’s first victory of the day.

Ashe took the fifth seeded match with Kasey Curcio returning from an injury to beat Julie Newmark, 6-2, 6-2.

The final singles match went Elkin’s way with a win for Emma Aldridge over Ella Copeland.

In the remaining doubles matches, the Lady Elks earned wins. Nicholson and Walters beat Brown and Witherspoon, 8-1, and Newmark and Aldridge were 8-6 winners over Curcio and Copeland.

“This was a great win and a great match. This should help give our team more confidence and momentum going forward,” said Coach Dix. “I am so proud of this team and their attitude, efforts, and sportsmanship.”

With the calm weather outside, Ashe was able to continue playing exhibition matches for the younger athletes. Rae Zeller and Keely Caddell won their doubles match, 6-1, in one of their best matches of the season. Erin Griffin and Callie Powell also won, 6-1.

Abby Manley and Hayley Taylor played hard but lost, 6-2. Kaylie Fernandez and Emily Blevins lost, 8-5, and Sierra Eicher lost in singles, 6-0.

Ashe is now 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Coming up, Ashe will travel to Wilkes Central next Tuesday and travel to East Wilkes two days later.
