Wins continue to roll in for the women’s tennis team with two more 9-0 wins over North Wilkes and Starmount last week.
Ashe traveled to North Wilkes on Wednesday in a match that was rescheduled from August due to rain.
The Lady Huskies won all six singles matches in straight sets and made it look easy in doubles action.
Top seeded Hallie Brown beat Sara Bumgarner, 6-1, 6-0. Second and third seeds Maggie Witherspoon and Grace Miller both had 6-0, 6-0 wins over Lauren Handy and Angela Jordan.
Fourth seeded Kasey Curcio grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Maria Mayer. Fifth seeded Mary Austin Tugman and sixth seeded Ella Copeland each had 6-0, 6-0 wins.
“This was a good match for our team in that it provided opportunity to experience the diversity in conference play as well as opportunities to work on ground strokes, net play, court position and control,” said Head Coach Larry Dix.
Brown and Witherspoon beat Bumgarner and Handy, 8-1 in the opening doubles match. Miller and Tugman were 8-0 winners against Jordan and Mayer and the tandem of Curcio and Copeland beat Laura Phillips and Kaitlin Billings, 8-1.
On Thursday, Ashe turned right around to host Starmount, and played very well once again.
Ashe swept all nine matches for the second consecutive day, including several impressive performances in the singles matches.
“With this win, Ashe has now won the last five matches in a row. I commend the team for their efforts and ‘never give up attitude’,” said Coach Dix.
Brown dominated her opponent Erin York on the way to a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Witherspoon beat Kristin Nicks, 6-1, 6-1 and Miller was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Madison McClellan.
In the fourth seeded match, Starmount player Amber Hurst rolled her ankle and was forced to retire in the first set, giving Curio the forfeit victory.
Tugman and Copeland defeated Quinn Gillian and Molly Nichols in straight sets.
The doubles matches were much closer. Coach Dix pointed out that this was the third match of the week for the ladies and the players being tired might have played a role in the closer matches.
Brown and Witherspoon battled to an 8-4 win over Nicks and McClellan. Miller and Tugman beat York and Gillian by an 8-3 margin and Curcio and Copeland took down Nichols and Rubi Martinez by an 8-4 score.
In exhibition matches on Thursday, Rae Zeller and Keely Caddell won a doubles match, 6-1. The team of Emily Blevins and Kaylie Fernandez lost a close doubles match, as did Abby Manley and Hayley Taylor.
