Even without top seed Hallie Brown playing her singles match, the Lady Huskies still found a way to beat Starmount on the road by a 7-2 score.

Brown missing her singles match meant seeds two through five each moved up a spot and Rae Zeller moved into the number six spot.

Maggie Witherspoon was the top seed on Tuesday and handled Erin York easily by a 6-1, 6-2 score.

Second seeded Grace Miller beat Kristin Nicks in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 and Kasey Curcio was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Madison McClellan.

Mary Austin Tugman dropped her first set, but quickly recovered to win the second set and eventually won the match by a 10-7 tiebreaker.

Senior Ella Copeland was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Quinn Gilliam and Zeller scored her first win as a top six seed with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph against Molly Nichols.

“The team played good singles with solid ground strokes, good net play and smart shots,” Head Coach Larry Dix said.

Starmount got both of its team wins in doubles matches. Nicks and McClellan beat Miller and Tugman, while Gilliam and Nichols beat Curcio and Copeland.

Brown and Witherspoon teamed up for a 9-8 win over York and Hurst.

“We have a lot of work to do in doubles to get ready for the conference tournament next week,” Dix said.

“Overall, it was a good win for us on the road.”

The Mountain Valley Conference Tournament is set for Oct. 8-10 in Elkin.

Exhibition results:

Erin Griffin and Callie Powell won 6-3.

Keely Caddell and Rae Zeller won 6-0.

Keely Caddell and Hayley Taylor won 6-2.

Abby Manley and Emily Blevins lost 6-2.

Sierra Eicher and Cheyenne Eicher lost 6-4.
