Lake Norman Charter, the third ranked team in the 2A state poll, was too much competition for the Lady Huskies in the first round of the state playoffs last week. The Knights advanced with a 7-1 victory.

“I thought our players played well and could have won more matches,” said Head Coach Larry Dix.

Top seed Hannah Archer won the 1A State Championship last year in the singles tournament as a freshman, and is looking to take home the crown this year in 2A.

Archer beat Ashe top seed Hallie Brown in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

In the second seeded match, Sravya Uppalapati beat Maggie Witherspoon, 6-1, 6-2.

Ashe got a win in the third seed match with freshman Grace Miller pulling off a tough 7-6, 6-2 win over Lauren Loveless.

LNC won the final three singles matches. Tiffany Onia beat Kasey Curcio, 6-4, 6-1. Emily Chrisman beat Mary-Austin Tugman, 6-4, 3-0 after Tugman had to forfeit the rest of the second set due to illness. Meghan Thomas beat Ella Copeland, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, Archer and Onia beat Brown and Witherspoon, 8-0. Grayson Warren and Megan Potuzak defeated Curcio and Copeland, 8-5.

“Overall, the match was closer than the score indicated and showed Ashe players that they could play with a highly-ranked team,” said Coach Dix. “This was a great experience for them.”
