Ashe takes third in holiday classic

After a tough loss in the first round of the Colvard Oil Holiday Classic to Hibriten, the Huskies bounced back to win the third place game over Forbush on Saturday.


Hibriten 56, Ashe 31


The Panthers led from the opening minutes to earn a spot in Saturday’s championship game against Watauga.


Ashe shot just 21-percent from the field and did not have a double-digit scorer.


Alex Spencer had eight points as the high scorer. Cullen Ashley added six points, Bradley Lucas scored four points and Connor Bowers added four. Devan Sheets scored three points, Stanton Moore had two, Corbin Winebarger had two, Kaleb Sexton added a free throw as did Parker Shelton.


Ashe 53, Forbush 36


The Huskies had a big first quarter, outscoring the Falcons 23-10 to set the tone for the rest of the game.


Bowers led the way with 11 points, three rebounds and two blocks. Ashley had a huge game on the boards with 14 rebounds to go along with nine points. Spencer chipped in nine points and three rebounds. Lucas had eight points, Sheets scored four points, Winebarger had four points and Shelton finished with four points and five rebounds.


Maison McNeill and Gavin Woodie rounded out Ashe’s scoring with two points each.


Ashley was named to the all-tournament team while Forbush’s Tyler Johnson was chosen to represent them.


Watauga captured the tournament championship while Cam Baker took home MVP honors.


The rest of the men’s all-tournament team were Jay Harrill (Watauga), Utah Jones (Watauga), Drake Felder (Hibriten) and Makaland Thomas (Hibriten.)


The Huskies are now 4-8 overall. Ashe puts its 2-0 conference record on the line this Friday at Starmount.
