The Lady Huskies took care of business on the road with a win at Starmount on Thursday, but could not go 2-0 last week as Wilkes Central came away with a win in West Jefferson on Friday.
Ashe 51, Starmount 16
Ashton Lee had a solid game with 11 points and seven rebounds to get Ashe’s third conference win of the season.
Junior Paige Spell led the team with 16 points and grabbed four boards. Fellow junior Morgan Hudler had eight points and three steals and sophomore Savannah Brooks had six points and seven boards. Abby Lopp scored five points and Tyler Eller hit a three-pointer in the win.
Defensively, Ashe held Starmount to single digit totals in each quarter.
“I thought we played a really strong third quarter and put the game away. Our defense was solid for the majority of the game,” said Ashe Head Coach Laura Foster.
Wilkes Central 44, Ashe 26
The Lady Husky players could not find their shooting touch on Friday evening, falling to Wilkes Central by 18 points.
“I was disappointed that we didn’t give Wilkes Central a better game. We are a better team than we played Friday night,” said Coach Foster. “But Wilkes Central has a really nice team with a lot of depth. When they subbed, there was not a drop off in skill level.”
Maegan McUmber led Central with 10 points. Brooke Bentley had nine points, Hannah Williams scored six, Laken Blackburn added five, as did teammates Taylor Mastin and Antania Graham.
Brooks led Ashe with eight rebounds and also scored six points. Hudler had seven points and two steals. Lopp scored four points, Hallie Brown scored two, Lee had two and Spell was held to just two points, her lowest output of the season.
“Our defense continues to be solid, we held them to 44 points and we out-rebounded them. We simply struggled offensively the entire game,” Foster said. “We were not able to make shots and we were not as aggressive as I would like to see us play.”
Ashe is now 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Ashe will have a pair of road games this week, first at West Wilkes on Tuesday and Alleghany on Friday.
