Ashe County picked up two key road conference wins to remain tied for second place in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Ashe 40, West Wilkes 35
Ashton Lee scored 13 points that included three-for-six shooting behind the three-point line. The Lady Huskies held on late in the fourth quarter to get the win.
“I am very proud of my team. We beat a very good West Wilkes team on their home court. This was a huge road win for us,” said Ashe Head Coach Laura Foster.
Sophomore Savannah Brooks had a strong game in the paint with 11 points and nine rebounds. Paige Spell added eight points, eight rebounds and three assists. Sydney Kate Grubb had three points, Abby Lopp scored two points and grabbed six boards, Hallie Brown scored two and Morgan Hudler was held to just one point.
The Ashe defense held West Wilkes to just two points down the stretch in the fourth quarter to hang on for the victory.
“We did a really great job defensively on their key players,” said Coach Foster.
According to Foster, the Blackhawks have averaged over 50 point per game this season, so holding them to 35 points is certainly a great accomplishment for the surging Lady Huskies.
Ashe 48, Alleghany 28
The Lady Huskies moved to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in the MVAC with another road victory.
Ashe outscored Alleghany 25-14 in the second half to build on a 23-14 halftime advantage.
“We played a really good second half. Our defense and rebounding once again was the difference in the game,” Foster said. “We had good balanced scoring.”
The team had three players in double figures including leading-scorer Spell with 14. Brooks had 12 points and Hudler added 10. Grubb finished with six points, Tyler Eller had three and Brown scored two.
Brooks grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the team. Spell had a game-high five steals.
“I was pleased with the win and we are looking forward to continuing the second round of conference play,” added Foster.
The Lady Huskies return home for a game against Starmount on Tuesday before hitting the road to conference-leading North Wilkes on Friday.
