Husky grapplers edge Alleghany

In the final home match of the regular season, Ashe County held on for a 32-29 win over visiting Alleghany.


The match started with Trojan wrestler Taylor Nester pinning Mitchell Brown at the 1:27 mark in the 220-pound match.


In the 285-pound battle, Jason Baker scored Ashe’s first win with an 8-2 decision over Matthew Nester.


Alleghany got a forfeit victory at 106-pounds for Jake Blevins.


The Huskies won the next two matches at 113 and 120-pounds. Jacob Weaver beat Dakota Long by an 18-1 technical fall and Bodi Miller won his match via forfeit.


Alleghany moved back in front when Britt Weaver beat Andrew Tedder by a 15-0 technical fall at 126-pounds and Jackson Williams pinned 132-pounder Brady Buchanan with 18 seconds left in the first period.


138-pounder Gabe Elliott won for Ashe with a forfeit. There was no match at 145 and Alleghany won the 152-pound match with a forfeit win for Justin Todd.


Michael Elliott and Shawn Baker won the last two matches of the night by forfeit in the 160 and 195-pound divisions. No matches took place at 170 or 182 pounds.


With the regular season coming to an end on Thursday night, the wrestlers will focus on the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament set for this Saturday at Wilkes Central.


After that, individual regionals will start on Feb. 14 and Ashe County High School will be the host for this year’s 2A Midwest Regional. Regional champs will be crowned on Saturday, Feb. 15.


The state championship tournament will be in Greensboro as usual, beginning on Feb. 20.
